Note: It is possible that some of these exercises may bring up difficult emotions or memories. You may want to complete them with the support of a trusted person and/or seek additional Support Resources if you feel distressed at any point.
The setting and your reason for disclosing will determine what you choose to share from your overall story. Rarely will you share everything.
For example, if your goal is to get accommodations at work, you might want to share:
Specific challenges that affect your work
Concrete accommodations that would help
Your strengths and what you contribute
Your work-related goals and ambitions
You don't need to share:
Your entire childhood history
Personal interests or struggles unrelated to work
In some situations, you may decide to talk about your need for support or accommodation without telling people you are autistic.
Now, practise adapting your story for specific situations and matching your story to your goal. This worksheet will help you to clarify your reason for sharing and select the parts of your story that are most relevant.
Tip: You don't have to plan for every possible situation. Focus on 1-2 scenarios you're currently facing or likely to face soon.
Remember, you are in control of how much you choose to share!
