In this section, you will learn to craft your personal story in a way that feels authentic to you and serves your goals. If you've decided that you may want to share your autism diagnosis or autistic identity in certain contexts, this will help you to think through the story you want to tell others. However, even if you’ve decided not to disclose, it can be helpful to think about the story you tell yourself.
Your story will be different depending on who you're telling it to and why - this guide gives you the tools to shape your message for different situations.
This section has three pages: we recommend that you work through them in order.
This page will show you examples of other autistic adults sharing their stories and provide you with a worksheet that you can use to draft your own story.
⏱️ About 45 - 60 minutes
This page will help you to think through what you want to share from your story, with a worksheet for you to practise adapting the message to your goal and context.
⏱️ About 15 - 30 minutes
This page will support you in reframing any unhelpful beliefs in your story. It will start with examples of how other autistic people have challenged stigmatising statements and end with a worksheet for you to rephrase your own self-descriptions (if needed).
⏱️ About 30 - 45 minutes
Note: It is possible that some of these exercises may bring up difficult emotions or memories. You may want to complete them with the support of a trusted person and/or seek additional Support Resources if you feel distressed at any point.
